Let’s look at a typical person… They have been shown an opportunity of network marketing by a close friend or family member. They absolutely love the product and the compensation plan even more so. The light bulb turns on, they think to themselves, WOW I love this product, and holy cow all my friends and family are going to love it also, and their friends and friends of friends, etc… and this can turn into something huge and I’m going to get my free car, and I’m going to retire early, and I’m going to go on vacation, and oh that new house I always wanted. (The problem is, it usually does not turn out this way, although it has…but I think the figure is 93% of the time it doesn’t)

Since friends and family aren’t turning out, why not use technology or the Internet? So the search begins, and before you know it, you run across something called a ‘System’ that will automatically have prospects calling you about your opportunity. One of the problems with systems are, instead of using them to market your initial product, you turn out marketing the system itself. You start social network accounts, asking strangers to be your friend by the hundreds, tweeting, faking that attraction marketing is making you ‘the man’… I’m sorry folks, but the only person becoming profitable in this, is the creator of the system. They supply a lot of training which is really good, and is probably the way they made it to the top, but the problem is, you are in the same training as every other person that has joined the system. Which means…. You’re saying the same things, you’re posting in the same forums, your posting the same ads, your posting the same articles, and you and the majority of the persons you’re essentially advertising to, are the same people that are in the same system as you.

If you truly want to become successful in the network marketing industry, my advice is to be honest and be a leader. Be the person to make real relationships in person (not online) or on the telephone. Don’t look for hundreds of people (since you can’t truly coach that many). Be the coach of 5 people and teach those 5 how to be a coach of another 5. I think this where most network marketer’s fail… It’s not the quantity of people, it’s the quality of people. Don’t worry about numbers, they’ll come if you’re doing your job right. Build relationships, meet at least once a week, email your downline on what’s working for you, be a true sponsor and give a speech at a gathering. Folks, this isn’t going to happen by itself so it does take commitment. Don’t get discouraged, and stick to you’re roots to prosper.

Those were the good old days. Speaking to everyone within a three foot radius. Handing out business cards to anyone who would take them. Putting flyers on car windshields at the local mall. Today, many in the industry call that sort of thing “old school”.

The way to build a home based MLM business today is on the Internet. There is no question that many successful business have been developed using this technology. But, are many net workers overlooking some of the old school methods that were also used to build successful businesses?

Long before the Internet, many people we able to build very large networks using the old school methods. Of course today, the Internet allows us to reach many more people who may want to be involved in joining an MLM. But should we discount other, more traditional ways to build a network?

I feel that many people are missing a great opportunity by not doing more promotion of their business at the local level. This doesn’t mean that you have to go out putting flyers on parked cars, but there are certainly other ways, along with the Internet, to build your business.

The important thing to remember when promoting your business at the local level is not to make your friends feel that they have to look at your business opportunity. Once you tell them about your venture, if they are interested in it they will tell you.

Most times others do not see what you see in a business opportunity. And the reason is that they are just not looking for a business opportunity. This doesn’t mean that they will not be interested at a later date. A person’s situation can change and sometime in the future they may change their mind.

The same holds true for selling your products to friends and family. Never tell them that they have to buy your products because they are simply the best. Remember, most people are very conscious of price, and if they can get a similar product at the local mall, they usually will. The quality may not be as good, but they are looking at price.

As you build your network marketing business don’t overlook your local area. Of course the Internet is one of the best ways to develop a business, but it is not the only way. Use your imagination on ways to promote at the local level.

We go to self-help seminars, we read motivational books, listen to lectures, and even study the habits of successful people, but nothing seems to change, right? Yes, attending motivational seminars and reading all the latest self-help books certainly are positive additions to your life. But those attempts at painting by the numbers to success won’t work.

NO. The answer is your ATTITUDE, your PHILOSOPHY…every day.

Yes, it is THAT simple. How is your attitude about yourself? Your life? Your job? Your family, spouse, significant other, pet, teacher, boss, you get the point. What’s your philosophy of YOUR life? Until you can change that you haven’t got a prayer. Go to Amazon.com and search for self-help books. You’re right, there are thousands. There are so many that Amazon even categorizes them into “special interests” for you. Don’t misunderstand, I have a fortune invested in these types of books and tapes and spend most of my time in the nonfiction departments. There’s a lot of really good ideas and scholarly studies done on the topic of personal self-help. But not one of these books is going to help you to realize your dreams.

If these how-to books were the answer then why don’t all the books on dieting work for most people? It’s not that the information is bad. No, its the fact that we don’t keep doing what we are taught. We haven’t developed the attitude of success, the philosophy of consistent winning! Doing the right things every day. Its a discipline of life that one must develop to be successful. Its hard. Its real hard. It hurts. Its cold some mornings when the alarm goes off for that 2 mile jog. You really want that piece of chocolate cake. You worked really hard today and can save that report til tomorrow. The kids have been sick all week. I was told NO by prospective buyers three times today… Attitude and philosophy work hand in hand in the success game. Your attitude is the motivator behind the action. The how-to behind your winning processes. But your philosophy is the winning ingredient in the recipe. Your philosophy is what binds it all together today, tomorrow and the next day. Your can-do, positive philosophy drives your positive attitude that creates the positive actions.

Personal attitudes of either entitlement or value-driven. Entitlement: Pay me a higher wage and I’ll work harder.What have you done for me lately. OR, a value-driven attitude that says, I’ll work harder at my job then I’ll be paid for more results. What can I do to help you attitude. Look at those around you. You can see philosophy oozing out everywhere. Some entitlement, some value-driven. Does it have anything to do with our fear of failure? If we try harder and fail then we are Failures! Is that the fear? If you pay me first and I fail then its your fault for paying me for something I couldn’t do!

Failure is a philosophy. Unfortunately we have been taught by our schools and many times parents and friends that failure is bad. Without failures there would be no successes. Remember the story of Thomas Edison failing thousands of times in his effort to invent the filament for the electric light bulb? When asked how he felt about so many failures enroute to inventing the electric light bulb, he cleverly replied that, That he NOW knew thousands of ways that it would not work!

Successful people FAIL their way to success. The biggest difference between successful people and those that are not is their philosophy. A successful person sees that an investment today will reap benefits in the future, and has the patience to wait. A simple philosophy of plant, cultivate and harvest. A successful person is not afraid of failure because they know that with every failure come many successes. A successful marriage or relationship is not created in a couple of days. After weeks and months, sometimes years of personal successes and failures a courtship may produce a successful and rewarding marriage. Was it worth it?

How long will it take before my new business makes me rich? How long will it take until I can quit working two jobs? How long will it take until I can be my own boss?…How long will it take? Pretty good chance that it will take longer than you had hoped…but when it arrives…you’ll be amazed by how quick.

However, some in the industry now feel that the best way to build a business is to present the products rather than the opportunity. When you speak to a prospect which do you present first?

Those new to MLM are so hyped about building a network that they think everyone they meet is anxious to get into business. And they have been told that the way to build a business is to get as many associates to join the business under you.

The problem with this view is that not everyone is looking to be in business. In fact, most people have no real interest at all in being in business. Even in today’s economy where many people have lost their jobs, a business venture is not on their mind.

So trying to promote a business to people who have no interest in one is a waste of your valuable time. It can also become very discouraging. It doesn’t take many rejections before one begins to have doubts about their ability to build a business. Giving up is not far off.

One has to realize that building a business takes time. And one also has to realize that if you don’t have any customers you don’t have a business. So it only makes sense that if you want to build a network marketing business then you should be looking for customers, not business associates.

The best way to get customers is to present them with your products. If it is something they are looking for you may have a sale. If they do purchase and like your products then they will likely buy again from you. This is how you build a business by presenting your products.

The more products you sell, obviously the more money you will make. The more customers you have the more sales you make. Your business begins to grow. Remember, no customers means no business.

But the question remains as to how do you get more associates, or business partners, into your business. Once you start building a customer base, you are also building an associate base. Some of the customers will like the products so much that they will become interested enough to want to get involved in the business opportunity.

Building a network marketing business is a long process, best achieved by building a customer base. And when you can align yourself with others that are successful at building an MLM, your success will come sooner rather than later.

Today, many in the MLM industry still encourage beginners to start with such a list. However, others will question such a tactic for a number of reasons.

One of the biggest problems of making such a list and approaching those on it has to do with credibility. Your credibility. Unless you have been in business, and that should be a successful business, you have very little credibility with regards to business, in the eyes of those you approach.

You are new to the world of business and these people know it. They know your background. What you have done and what you are capable of. There is probably not one good reason why they should follow you into business.

Now you may think that just because they know you they should jump right in with your business opportunity. After all, this is you they are talking to. But you have to take a step back and try to see what they see.

They see an average Joe that is trying to make some extra money. And they usually see that way of making money as some sort of pyramid scheme. Your friends and family don’t see the great opportunity that you do. Why?

Because they are not looking for a business opportunity. Anyone that is not looking will not see. And if you become over zealous and try to convince them, you are heading for disaster. Never try to persuade someone to join you in your opportunity.

If they want to have their own home based business they will let you know when they are ready. And many will never be ready. It’s just not for them. And those who eventually want to try it will tell you they are interested. But don’t try to convince them that they are interested.

Network marketing can provide you with some extra cash each month or it could even replace your current income. But if you try to build it by convincing family and friends to join your MLM you are only a short distance from failure.

When you start out in network marketing, there is certainly nothing wrong with letting family and friends, your list, know you have decided to start a business. However, it turns into a problem once you try to convince those on your list to join your opportunity.

Don’t get into the trap of thinking your family and friends want the same things as you do. They don’t! And when they do, if they are interested in what you have to offer, they will come to you. Just be patient.

It is difficult at best to convince someone about how good your product is. Even when you are able to get people to try the product for free, they often do not become sold on the product you are pushing. People have different results from the same item. It may help some and not others. Unless they happen to see benefits from it and they are able to receive their own testimonial of its goodness, it is not easy to sell the product without the opportunity.

Because network marketing companies are work at home opportunities and home based businesses which pay their distributors the advertising budget funds, the products are often priced higher when compared with similar products found in stores. Distributors are willing to pay the extra price because they should be able to make their money back and then some when their business gets established. When they begin to earn money from their business, the price of the product is not a concern to distributors.

At the beginning before any money is earned, it can be difficult to pay the high cost of the products required to stay active and be qualified to receive commissions. Distributors buy the product before they have anyone buying it under them. It’s good for the company but may not be good for the distributor if he/she is not able to begin earning quickly. In a few companies, distributors may receive some kick back on their own purchases, but most companies simply pay on the purchase volumes from the people under their distributors.

It is important for the distributors in any network marketing company to believe in the products they are selling, whether they are nutritional supplements or long distance service. If they don’t like the products, they cannot be effective in the business. They have to be sold on the products themselves, and they should believe that they are good. It is also important for a person to not get in over their heads. If they cannot afford a few months of expenditures to the company, they should consider carefully whether or not to join. Everyone is excited at first, but it could be a difficult business if success comes slowly.

These people rarely find the perfect company, with the perfect products and the perfect plan. Why? Because they never stick around long enough to reach success. They quit and go on to the next program before they even get started with the one they are in at the present.

The MLM jumper. Always looking for that perfect company but never putting in the effort to make that opportunity the perfect one for them. It’s kind of like the old saying, not seeing the trees because of the forest.

There must be reasons why people do this sort of thing. Could it be that they really are looking for a get-rich-quick program? We all know that those things don’t work. They are nothing but scams.

Or maybe these people are simply lazy. They are simply looking for the MLM company that will do everything for them. Well, we all know about those as well. They just don’t work.

Those who want a home based business but don’t want to work, will never find success. They are only interested in programs that offer success without work. And again, they just don’t exist. Of course there are those companies that promise they will build a successful business for you, but once you pay them, you usually never hear from them again.

But people keep on joining such programs. Going from one to the other. Always hoping that the next one will be the right one. If these people would put their effort into building their current business, success would be within reach.

However, it takes time to build a business and the network jumper wants things now, right away. They don’t have the time to work a business, yet they have the time to jump from one to the other. Sadly these people will never find the right business and they will more than likely lose a lot of their hard earned money in the process.

If only these people would find an opportunity and stick with it, they may have some positive results. But if they continue to be a network jumper they will always be looking and wasting their time and money because they always think their success will be in the next program.

Some claim that an easy way to earn extra income is by doing surveys and joining forum groups. The ads say a person can earn hundreds of dollars a day with only a part time effort. There must be people who are successful at earning money by taking surveys, but good paying ones are hard to find. Most survey sites are free to join, but people are being enticed to buy a survey opportunity for $39.95. When they pay the money, they are given a listing of survey sites which are free to join. Someone may be making a good income on these projects, but it is unlikely to be the person taking the surveys.

After people sign up with a survey opportunity, they are sent emails telling them when a survey is available. If they complete the survey, they may be paid one or two dollars (occasionally more) for twenty minutes of work. Often people will fill out the preliminary information (which could take several minutes) only to find out that they do not qualify to take the survey. A survey which pays $1.00 could take twenty to thirty minutes of work, and the survey may be filled and no longer available within hours. People are trying hard to earn money so they are willing to work for well below the normal minimum wage. Is that pathetic or what? If they have lots of time and enjoy it, that is fine.

Another method of earning money is by clicking on ads. A person signs up with a site which pays them two cents per click. It takes a long time for two cents to add up to any income. It could take months to get a $30.00 check. People are likely to quit before they ever receive payment which means that leaving money on the table is a boon to the people running the site.

In this bad economy, many people are looking for a way to supplement their income or to earn money at all. There are numerous opportunities for earning money even in a recession, but the good opportunities are not be easy to find. While some people are willing to do work for pathetic returns, others are making huge incomes with home based businesses. Finding a good fit may be difficult, but trying one out may be the only way to find out is an offer is good.
