BillShrink $250 Cash Giveaway Winner Announced!

Last week, I announced a money giveaway offered by BillShrink, where a randomly selected commenter would be awarded $250 in cash. I requested for you to help name BillShrink’s website model and to check out their tools, which aim to help you save money on your gas bills, cell phone plans and credit card payments.

BillShrink $250 cash giveaway
Not an accurate representation of the actual prize, but close enough.

Well, the time has finally come for the winner to be announced! My random pick is comment #16, by “jen”, who supplied four interesting names for the model, funny enough! But out of the four names (Billie, Penny, Dolores N. Cents, Payshence Saves ;) ), I guess I’d like to settle on the conventional name “Penny”. It’s simple and fits the “pretty penny” mold, which is what BillShrink helps you save. So I’ll be getting in touch with jen soon to send her the $250 prize.

And for all those of you who joined our giveaway, I would like to say a heartfelt thanks for taking the time to check out BillShrink and for leaving us a comment. I hope to get the opportunity to hold more giveaways like this in the future!

Let’s now check on this week’s great bunch of reads from some of my favorite financial talking heads. As always, it’s a list I enjoyed putting together:

Time Is Money, So How Do You Spend Your Day?

I just love this kind of thing: have you seen the interactive graphic from the NY Times that details how different demographic groups spend their day? Since time is money (or so they say), actually seeing a visual of how we spend our most precious resource is truly enlightening. This colorful graphic is based on the American Time Use Survey which pooled together the information gathered from thousands of Americans. Here’s a little sample of how the graphic looks (you can click on the image below to check out details of the survey and to see how the interactive graphic works): Time Is Money: How Do You Spend Your Day? The emphasis here is on how the nearly 1 in 10 unemployed people in America are spending their days compared to everyone else. But behind the colorful presentation, there are a few other interesting findings you’ll garner from this study: The unemployed catch up on more sleep than those who are employed (one more hour of sleep at night — that’s a lot!). As expected, they’ve got more time to spend on other activities to fill the vacuum abandoned by “work”

Investing Money In Stocks, Mutual Funds and ETFs

Learning to invest? Tim Parker from Elementary Finance covers some of the basics of stocks, mutual funds and ETFs. If I were to ask 10 everyday people to tell me what they think of stocks, ETFs, and mutual funds, I bet the results would look something like this: All of them would have some preconceived notion about stocks. Most of them would have heard of mutual funds. And maybe 1 or 2 would know about ETFs. Interestingly, the ETF, although widely unknown, is one of the fastest growing investment products in the financial realm. But let’s take a look at all three of these financial vehicles and see how they stack up

Fun Gift Ideas For The Finance Enthusiast

So how was Father’s Day? Got anything for your dad or husband this year? In my case, it’s a simple phone call and greeting (my dad lives abroad), while in our household, my spouse and I don’t really fall for the pressures of gift giving that much. Nice little trinkets from our kids always serve as our tokens of appreciation for each other during occasions like Mother’s or Father’s Day. Christmas, birthdays and anniversaries are hard enough for us to figure out: we negotiate for the most low cost and high value things we can happily exchange with each other, without having to upset the budget.

One Million Dollars Down The Drain

Have you become a millionaire yet? If so, then here’s the next challenge: hold on to the money! This really broke my heart. I just read a story from Tel Aviv about this unfortunate woman who lost her mattress. She had been sleeping on the same old, ratty mattress for decades, and her daughter felt she would do her mother a favor by trading it in for something nice and new. What her daughter didn’t realize was that the old mattress housed her mother’s life’s savings. Cash padded its interior which amounted to a million dollars. There are apparently still people out there who literally keep their money in their mattress (there are much better places to keep your money safe )

How to Get Traffic Quickly and Make Money Fast

by Validar Ralsatte If you’re familiar with internet marketing, you’vep robably heard all the rage about facebook, myspace and other social media power-sites like stumbleupon and digg. They’re super popular but should they be? Consider these points before you solely rely on social networking sites to drive traffic to your website: * Myspace and Facebook have a huge number of dead pages – So many users have “been there, done that” that they do not login to there accounts anymore. You would basically be marketing to the wall. * Myspace and Facebook has implemented numerous safety guards – They have made changes which are hypersensitive against spam, and they label any outgoing links as spam or potential phishing sites. This puts a scare into people using these services, and causes them to apprehensive to clicking any outgoing links to your site. * Social Networking is about dead – When these services were new, they were great.
